Kankakee NAACP to host mayoral candidates forum

The Kankakee County chapter of the NAACP Political Action Committee will host a candidates forum Tuesday. The 5:30 pm event is at Kankakee Public Library.

The public is welcome to hear the Kankakee Democratic mayoral candidates.

Candidates who are running as Democrats for Kankakee mayor in the February 28 primary election have been invited to participate. They include 5th Ward Ald. Chasity Wells-Armstrong, 2013 mayoral candidate Jarman Porter, Kankakee County Board member Robert Ellington-Snipes and former 5th Ward Ald. Dexter Thompson.

The winner of the primary will face incumbent Republican Mayor Nina Epstein in the April 4 general election.

Ku Klux Klan flyers discovered in Iroquois County communities

Community leaders are bothered by Ku Klux Klan materials appearing in several area towns, including Iroquois County.
City/village elected officials are quick to report “it’s unwanted advertisement for the KKK.”

Small plastic bags filled with rice have been found lying on sidewalks and in drive-ways. Literature is included with information about the Ku Klux Klan. Those people reporting finding the material call it “trash and hateful advertising.”

The literature has been found in Clifton, Chebanse, Ashkum and Martinton.

The same hateful material has been reported in Kankakee County, in Bradley, Manteno and Kankakee. Last week, the KKK literature was also seen in parts of Will County and also in parts of Champaign and Vermilion counties.

Major Cocaine arrests in Will County

Three individuals are suspected of trafficking illegal drugs from Texas, through Will County. The Will County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests. All three men have been charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. Estimated street value of the seized cocaine is over $200,000.00.

All three suspects, who are from Chicago, are jailed at the Will County Adult Detention Facility. They’re identified as 40-year-old Jose E. Lopez, 50-year-old Ernesto Zuniga and 43-year-old Adrian Montanez

On Thursday, Will County Sheriff’s deputies stopped two vehicles near I-57 and Wilmington-Peotone Road after receiving a tip from another law enforcement agency. The Sheriff’s office K-9 Unit was called to the scene where the dogs indicated the possible presence of illegal drugs on one of the vehicles. Deputies performed a search and recovered 9 kilo’s of cocaine. During questioning it was determined that both vehicles and all three occupants were involved in the incident.

Missing Person: Watseka Police ask for help

A missing person report has the Watseka Police Department and the Becker family asking for the public’s help in locating 59-year-old Donald E. Becker.

He was last seen at 9 am Tuesday, about three miles south of Watseka. Don Becker was driving a black 2007 Dodge Dakota 4-door pick-up truck with Illinois registration 6 5 7 0 6 U.

Watseka Police report local pilots would be conducting fly-overs in Iroquois County.

Anyone with any information as to the whereabouts of Don Becker or his vehicle is asked to call Watseka Police at 815-432-4918.

UPDATE: Danville fire victim identified

The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim found Thursday in a residence where fire broke out earlier that day. 75-yerar-old David Singleton was identified. He lived at the residence at 300 Park Street in Danville.

Coroner Jane McFadden said today (Thursday) Singleton’s family has been notified. An autopsy will be performed today.

The Danville Fire and Police Departments, the Coroner’s Office and the Illinois State Fire Marshall continue the investigation.

Officials are still looking for the cause. The victim was found in a bathroom in the two-story structure that had been divided into multiple residences for veterans.

Danville’s Public Safety Office reported five veterans lived at the residence. One other occupant was rescued from the front porch.

• Alvin house gutted by fire....

Another Vermilion County fire damaged a house in Alvin.

73-year-old Louis Dickison, his wife and son escaped without injury when the fire broke out Thursday afternoon.
Some 50 firemen from several departments answered the call. Damage was heavy in an upper floor. Un-official reports declared the house a total loss.

Bismarck Firefighter Protection District received mutual aid from the Blue Grass, Lynch and Rossville Fire Departments. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
