Watseka structure fire fueled by high-winds Saturday

A team of firefighters helped control flames that destroyed the D & S Excavating workshop at the edge of Watseka Saturday evening. The structure fire triggered a box alarm, alerting several departments to a potentially-explosive site – along what’s commonly known as Gasoline Alley (Maple Street, alongside the Union Pacific Railroad). Watseka Fire Chief Tim Ketchum said the D & S workshop was destroyed. The threat of the flames extending north to another storage area and fuel storage area was the big concern. And the winds were no one’s friend. Ketchum said crews were assigned to prevent the spread of the fire to other buildings.

No one was injured. Other buildings and equipment were spared. Departments answering the call to assist Watseka included Woodland, Crescent City, Milford, Martinton, Ashkum, Gilman, Sheldon, Concord, Donovan, Chebanse Township,Beaverville, Papineau, St. Anne and Kentland, IN.
