CHAMPAIGN — A $100 million gift gives U of I football a new name for its home field. The gift is from from Larry Gies to Illinois' Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA). That gift renames the home of Illinois football to ... Gies Memorial Stadium.
The announcement from the University of Illinois is the largest gift ever in DIA history. Larry Gies donated $100 million in honor of Gies' late-father, who served in the U. S. Army. Gies Sr. donated $150-million in 2017 to the University of Illinois' college of business which also that also bears his family's name and is now responsible for the largest gift in DIA history. The new $100 million gift is in honor of Gies' late father, Larry Gies Sr., who served in the U.S. Army.
The gift recognition is pending approval by the Board of Trustees at its meeting on Sept. 18.
