Snow Squall Warnings create treacherous travel conditions …

A Snow Squall Warning has been extended for much of the WGFA-listening area, affecting much of east central Illinois and west-central Indiana. Several counties are included in the warning.

The National Weather Service issued snow squall warnings about 8 am, extending the weather alert through 10 am and beyond.

A snow squall is an intense, often short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds. Sudden whiteout conditions and slick roadways can lead to high speed accidents with large pileups resulting in injuries and fatalities. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are likely.
Visibility can deteriorate in a hurry, reduce visibility and cause slick road and bridge conditions. Motorists should be alert for black ice.
