Lawmakers look to curb violence

Illinois lawmakers and representatives from several law enforcement agencies met last week to discuss possible solutions for curbing violence in the state. The hearing consisted of members of the House Public Safety and Violence Committee and multiple law enforcement officers. State Rep. Maura Hirshauer said the most important issue they face as lawmakers is public safety. Executive Director of the Illinois Sheriffs Association Jim Kaitschuk said that the state should look into certain benefits for officers to improve recruitment efforts.  Illinois has seen a police officer shortage in parts of the central region as well as in Chicago.
