Kankakee City Council approves solar farm project

The Kankakee City Council has given a thumbs up to a solar farm project that’ll produce enough electricity to power up to 600 homes. Nexamp, a company based in Washington, D.C., is ready to move forward with plans to construct an 18-acre farm in the city’s 7th Ward. The company plans indicate it’ll take up to nine months to building the solar farm. Work is expected to begin in the Spring of 2025.

The Daily-Journal reports the Waldron Road Solar Farm, LLC WILL HAVE 6,576 SOLAR MODULES installed. The property site is east of Waldron Road, where I-57 cuts thru Kankakee.

The property is currently farm ground, west of Grace Christian Academy. The D-J reports the project was approved by the Kankakee Planning Board. The full City Council will give its blessing at its April 15 meeting.

The Nexamp website states the company, founded in 2007, develops, builds, owns and operates community-scaled solar farms. The company has 20 Illinois solar farms in operation. Nexamp operates 250 locations in the U.S.
