Juneteenth Holiday

Today is Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. It marks June 19th, 1865 when Major General Gorden Granger and his two-thousand Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and proclaimed that more than 250-thousand enslaved Black people in Texas were free. Slavery was officially abolished in the U.S. in December 1865.

Holiday closures on this Juneteenth include banks.  There's no mail delivery, Federal offices are closed and many state employees are entitled to a paid day off for the public holiday.  Most all retailers are open.  Several state parks and museums are offering free admission.

The national holiday for Juneteenth was signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021.
