Another fatal crash on I-57 in Iroquois County. A passenger in a car died when the southbound vehicle hit a guardrail just south of Gilman Tuesday night. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by County Coroner Bill Cheatum. The driver was transported to Riverside Hospital. His condition is unknown. Illinois State Police, Onarga Fire and Riverside Ambulance responded. A passerby reported the accident. The vehicle was found in the median after its driver hit the guardrail.
It’s the second I-57 fatal in three days. A Rantoul man was killed early Monday when his wrong-way car slammed into another vehicle near Buckley. 45-year-old Emiliano Ortega-Galeana was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when he slammed into a second vehicle driven by a Paxton woman. The Paxton driver escaped serious injury.
