Gold Star Memorial Monument project in Watseka moves forward

A special groundbreaking event in Watseka Sunday. Gold Star Military Families, local supporters, friends, and American Legion members joined local officials in a ceremonial groundbreaking at Legion Park.  It was the actual start of bringing a GOLD STAR MEMORIAL MONUMENT to Iroquois County—one of just two such monuments in Illinois. The granite-stone structure will be at the entrance to Legion Park (South 4th Street).

The local GOLD STAR Committee turned the shovels of dirt to get the project started.  Gold Star mothers saying thank you for the support include Tammy Allen, Kris Hemp and Gwen Childress.  Gold Star family members also includes Scott Childress, Scott Allen, Alicia Marshall and Eric West.

Supporting the GOLD STAR Committee were: Mayor John Allhands, Bob Tincher of Hillside Development and Jack LaVicka of LaVicka Works. Iroquois County Sheriff deputies and Watseka Police Officers were in attendance.

Pastor Kevin Nourie of the Crescent City Methodist Church offered prayer. Tim Rehmer sang the National Anthem.

American Legion Post 23 presented the colors.

GOLD STAR Committee Co-Chair Scott Allen extends a heart-felt Thank You for the community support and Legion Post 23’s open arms.  The Committee continues its fundraising efforts while working with the Woody Williams Foundation.
