Crop progress report: 4% corn, 7% soybeans planted
Corn and soybean planting in Illinois are both running ahead of average pace for early April, with most activity happening in the southern half of the state.
According to USDA, 4% of Illinois corn had been planted as of April 12, up three percentage points from the week prior and just ahead of the five-year average pace. Seven percent of the state’s soybeans were planted as of Sunday, compared to the average pace of 2%.
Warm weather in prime wheat growing areas has that crop progressing ahead of average pace as well.
USDA reported 6% of winter wheat had headed as of Sunday, 3% ahead of average. The crop is rated 10% excellent, 57% good, 27% fair, 4% poor and 2% very poor.
