Brush Fire leads to death of Watseka man

The cause of death is yet to be determined, but a brush fire in Watseka Monday included the death of an elderly man. 88-year-old Davy Walker was reported to have been trying to put out a leaf fire on his property. He was found at the scene when Watseka Fire and Riverside Ambulance arrived at the scene on N. Jefferson Street a little before 4 pm. Watseka Fire Chief Ken said the investigation determined this was an accident.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in McLean County.

Walker routinely burned debris along his property line near the river on N. Jefferson Street. It appeared the fire may have gotten out of control, due to winds, leading to the effort to stomp out the flames. No other property damage was reported from the fire.
