Acid leak at Crescent City Post Office

                                         HazMat response, no serious injury

A HazMat incident (Saturday morning) alerted fire and emergency management agency officials to the Crescent City Post Office.  After about four hours, an acid leak was cleaned up, a postal delivery driver was treated for a breathing issue, and Crescent-Iroquois Fire Chief Scott Dirks said there was no health threat to the community……

"We weren't sure at first what we had to deal with, but then the liquid leaking told us not to take a chance and we notified the HazMat team from Kankakee County," Chief Dirks said.  "There was never a threat to the community folks."

Several emergency response teams were called to Crescent City, including Crescent City Fire and EMS, Watseka Fire, Iroquois County Emergency Management, and the HazMat Emergency Response Team from MABAS 7 in Kankakee County.

Chief Dirks said the postal driver experienced the cloud-fume and haze inside his truck. The strong odor came from a boxed-container that leaked in a fall……

"A jug of muriatic acid, used for clearing adhesives from floors, had leaked, the odor posed a bit of concern so the driver was checked out."

The truck driver was treated and released at IMH. Emergency personnel were on the scene from just after 7:30 am until about noon.
