Top Sports Moments from the First Half of 2026

2026 has been off to an incredible start in the world of sports and there have been many great moments thus far. As we hit the halfway mark of the year, let’s take a look back at some of the top moments so far:

1. Locally, the biggest highlight was Addison Lucht of Cissna Park ending her storied high school career by winning the IHSA Class 1A triple jump state title with an 11.16-meter mark. It was the Milford/Cissna Park track and field program’s first-ever state title. She also finished third in the shot put with a personal-best of 12.51 meters and was sixth in the long jump with a season-best of 5.31.

2. Three professional teams ended lengthy championship droughts:

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29–13 to claim Super Bowl LX and their first title since 2013. Kenneth Walker III was named Super Bowl MVP, the first running back to win the award since Terrell Davis in 1997.

The New York Knicks took advantage of their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 to end a 53-year championship drought by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in 5 games and avenge their 5-game loss to the Spurs in that 1999 title series. Jalen Brunson was named the Finals MVP.

In the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes ended a 20-year title drought with a 4-2 series victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in what will go down as a instant classic battle. Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour became just the fourth individual in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup with the same franchise as captain and head coach. He was the 14th individual to win as a coach and player for any team. Jordan Staal was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff MVP.

3. Speaking of instant classics, this year’s Indy 500 was one for the record books where Swedish Driver Felix Rosenqvist edged David Malukas to win the closest Indy 500 in history with a 0.023 difference in the margin of victory. It was the first Indy 500 win for Rosenqvist. The nail-biter finish followed some brief weather delays and multiple crashes including one that knocked two-time winner Josef Newgarden out of the race. The race also saw the most lead changes in Indy 500 history with 70. The previous was 68 in 2013. You can check out the full race replay by clicking here.

4. The Indiana Hoosiers captured their first-ever college football national championship by topping the Miami Hurricanes 27–21. The title capped off a perfect 16-0 season for the Hoosiers as they joined the 1894 Yale and the 2019 North Dakota State squads as the only other 16-0 Division I football champions according to the NCAA. Indiana also became the first new national champion since the Florida Gators in 1996.

5. The Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball team went on an incredible run to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament before falling to UConn 71-62. It was the first Final Four appearance for the program since the 2005 runner-up season and the best NCAA Tournament performance of Coach Brad Underwood's nine-year tenure. Michigan would end up beating UConn in the title game 69-63 to claim the Wolverines’ first national championship since 1989.
