Reddick man apparent drowning victim

Kankakee County Sheriff's police report a 61-year-old Reddick man was found dead in a lake outside of his home.

Russell A. Hartkopp was discovered face down in the lake near his home last Thursday afternoon. The man lived in Shannon Shores Mobile Home Park.

Sheriff's police report Hartkopp was found by his son.

Police reported Hartkopp was cleaning a raft while his 41-year-old son worked nearby. The son called police after he realized his father was face down in the water.

Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner said toxicology reports are pending An autopsy was completed Friday.

Benton County jail inmate found dead

They're calling it a suicide inside the Benton County, Indiana jail. An inmate was found dead early Thursday morning.

Benton County Sheriff Boston "Butch" Pritchett said the man was booked into the jail around 2:30 Thursday morning for driving under the influence.

Pritchett said a check on the man around 4 AM found him lying on a bench inside of the cell. According to Pritchett, the employee came back to check on him about 30 minutes later, and found him hanging inside the cell.

Pritchett said the man used a mattress cover to hang himself. Pritchett said there is no foul play, and authorities are ruling it a suicide.

Former Vermilion County prosecutor Larry Mills found dead in Urbana motel

Former Vermilion County State's Attorney Larry Mills was found dead Friday in an Urbana motel.

Urbana police were called to the Sleep Inn Motel on Lincoln Avenue around 12:20 pm while motel employees.A person was supposed to check out but hadn't, and the door was locked. Police report they found the 58-year-old Mills lying on the bed dead.

Police reported no obvious sign of foul play.

Mills was also serving as a Vermilion County Board member and was a former County State's Attorney.

Mills was a Danville attorney in private practice, elected in November to the Vermilion County board as a Democrat in District 7.

Kankakee Community College names new associate dean

Frederick Cooper is the newest member of the staff of Kankakee Community College. He'll serve as associate dean of the Math, Science & Engineering Division.

Cooper oversees the division's operation, including transfer-level courses in subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. Cooper assists in course and curriculum development.

Previously, Cooper was the academic director of the mathematics department at Spartanburg Community College in Spartanburg, S.C.

Cooper has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Clemson University; a master's in mathematics from College of Charleston; and a doctorate in educational leadership with a concentration in higher education from Clemson University.

Manteno man killed in Will County car crash

A traffic crash in Will County this (Fri) morning left a young Manteno man dead. 20-year-old Aaron Jackson was killed when he was thrown from his car in Wilton Township near Manhattan.

Sheriff's Police found the victim in a corn field around 8 am. Police report he was alone in the car.

The investigation is ongoing.
