Emergency responder injured at crash scene in White County

At least two people were injured after an ambulance was hit while on the scene of a crash on I-65 Tuesday morning.
Sargent Kim Riley with Indiana State Police said the original accident happened when a car failed to see a slowed semi and crashed.

An ambulance was dispatched and arrived on the scene of the accident to tend to minor injuries. While parked on location of the crash, a second semi collided with the ambulance causing significant damage to the vehicle.
One of the emergency responder was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

Watseka names interim police chief

Veteran Watseka police officer Jeremy Douglas is the city's acting police chief. Douglas was named the interim chief by the City Council Tuesday night. He succeeds Roger Lebeck who retired as chief, effective Monday.

Meanwhile, the search for a new police chief begins. The city plans to place ads in law enforcement publications. Mayor Bob Harwood said the search will take time to find the right person. 

The City Council discussed requirements for the job, including at least a two-year degree with military experience or a four-year degree.  The chief wopuld also be required to have at least 10-years experience as a certified police officer and pass a physical and mental evaluation.

Fire damages Danville-area home; barn fire in Bonfield

Firefighters from a half-dozen Vermilion County departments battled a house fire in the bitter cold Sunday night. (January 10th) The fire alerted the Kickapoo Fire Protection District. Mutual aid was called in from several other departments.

There were no reports of any injuries. The cause was under investigation.

At least a half-dozen fire departments responded to a barn fire in rural Bonfield Sunday. No word on a cause. No injury was reported. Damage estimates were in the neighborhood of $75,000.

Winter Weather Advisory

Fresh snowfall and blowing snow has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for east-central Illinois. The advisory is in effect until mid-morning. Blowing snow has reduced visibility and led to some traffic accidents.

Northwest winds are producing areas of blowing snow with near whiteout conditions. Roads are snow covered and hazardous.

A few school districts have closed or are on delayed-schedules.

Vermilion County deputies injured in I-74 crash

A semi-tractor trailer and two other vehicles were involved in a crash last (Monday) on I-74 near Oakwood. Two Vermilion County Sheriff's deputies were injured.

Another person was also hurt when the semi jack knifed and crashed into the squad car and another vehicle.

Illinois State Police report the crash happened about 10 pm in the west-bound lanes. Police reported the semi approached the scene where the deputies were investigating an earlier crash.

The deputies and the semi driver were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The two Vermilion County deputies were not identified. The semi driver is a 34-year-old man from Georgia. He was cited for driving too fast for conditions. A female driver of the third vehicle involved was from Danville.
