Weather Forecast: Snow Wednesday Night & Thursday

Special Statement

Statement as of 12:29 PM January 18, 2012

...Accumulating snow likely very late tonight into Thursday morning...

Latest forecast guidance suggests that a fast moving upper level disturbance will result in a period of snow developing very late tonight into Thursday morning. The best chance of snow appears to be along and south of Interstate 80...however some snow is possible farther north. Present indications are that the accumulations will be rather light...generally around inch or so...however the recent cold air has resulted in pavement temperatures well below freezing. Any snow that falls will accumulate on untreated roadways and lead to roadways turning very slippery and travel hazardous. In addition...temperatures will fall into the teens Thursday...which could result in salt used to treat roadways growing less effective with time tomorrow.

Persons planning travel Thursday morning should plan to leave extra time to get to their destination.

Rev. Jackson's Breakfast among MLK Events

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson and his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition are hosting an annual Martin Luther King Day Jr. scholarship breakfast.

It's the 22nd year of the event and attendees on today include Gov. Pat Quinn.

Officials with Jackson's civil rights organization say the goal is to highlight how large gaps in wealth and education persist among different populations.

Jackson has made poverty awareness a theme of commemorative events this year.

He announced Sunday his plans to spend the night at Pacific Garden Mission, a Chicago homeless shelters. Jackson says the millions of Americans living in poverty is a moral disgrace.

Also today (Monday), Chicago's Joffrey Ballet is offering an African dance class in commemoration of the holiday and the Bronzeville Children's Museum in Chicago will have a program featuring crafts.

In Kankakee today, the Dr. King Annual Prayer Breakfast is at the Quality Inn in Bradley.  Then a motorcade heads to the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Kankakee.

Mix of Rain & Snow -- Weather Advisory

Special Statement
Statement as of 5:25 AM January 16, 2012

...Wintry mix and snowfall possible late tonight and Tuesday...

With rising temperatures and an increase in moisture out ahead of an approaching surface low...light rain or drizzle...and fog will develop across much of northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana today. This surface low will then move east through the area tonight with an associated cold front ushering in much colder air...providing a transition to a wintry mix and then snow on Tuesday.

Current indications are that this light rain will transition to light freezing rain late tonight and early Tuesday morning for areas northwest of a line from La Salle to Chicago.
Although...this should be a brief window with no ice accumulation expected. A transition to all snow is then expected to occur through mid morning Tuesday for all areas in northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Before the snow ends Tuesday afternoon...a few inches of snow can be expected with locally higher amounts possible.

Details regarding freezing rain and snowfall potential will likely need further refinements and persons planning travel across the region late tonight and Tuesday should closely monitor later forecasts and statements.

Illinois 9 Reopened at Gibson City after Train Derailment

GIBSON CITY — Illinois 9 near Gibson City is  reopened after two train tanker cars filled with ethanol derailed but remained upright Thursday.

There was no leak and no injury reported.  The highway was cleared and allowed to reopen around 1 am today.

There was a temporary evacuation of a few businesses Thursday near the One Earth Energy Ethanol Plant.

Ford County Emergency Management Agency Director Dennis Higgins said Illinois 9 was closed for about one mile on Gibson City’s west side from Illinois 47 to Ford County Road 300 North.  That was a precaution since the tank cars were close to a power pole. A detour was marked.

City and county police and firefighters were at the scene.

The incident occurred just south of the One Earth Energy ethanol production plant,  just west of Gibson City. The rail-spur lines runs through the plant grounds. The cars left the track about a half mile west of the Illinois 47/9 intersection.
