Firefighters Battle Blaze at Momence Farm Business

Welders may have triggered a fire Wednesday in rural Momence.

The Van Drunen Farms, along Route 114 in Kankakee County, was the scene where about a half-dozen fire departments fought the blaze.   

Momence firefighters were being assisted by Grant Park, Aroma Park, St. Anne, Manteno and Peotone.

No serious injury was reported.

Historic Farm Days in Penfield

PENFIELD — Minneapolis-Moline and BF Avery farm equipment will reign at this year's Historic Farm Days, which runs through this weekend in Penfield. And don't be surprised to see a Doodlebug or two.

The annual Historic Farm Days will be held Thursday through Sunday on the grounds of the I & I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club. While there will be a few events Thursday, the show gets rolling Friday.

"We have a new building that has been erected that will host the feature brand equipment," I&I President John Fredrickson said.

A dedication ceremony for the new building is set for Saturday prior to the parade.

Poker Run / Block Party Fundraiser to Benefit Firefighters

The Red Knights Motorcycle Club welcomes participants this Saturday in the 5th Annual “Ride 4 the Rescuers” fundraiser.

The Chapter 14 Red Knights (out of Kankakee County) invite motorcyclists AND OTHERS to gather in Momence for a 12:30 pm line-up at Dixie Highway and West Washington Street.

Red Knight member Steve Wilder says music and entertainment will add to the fun.  All are welcome……….

There’s a $15 fee per driver, $10 per passenger.  All proceeds benefit the Firefighters Benevolent Fund… to support families of local firefighters injured in the line-of- duty.

There’s also a Silent Auction and Cash Prizes.

Teen Drowns in Danville Swimming Pool

A 17 year old Danville youth was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after being found in a pool at an apartment complex in Danville.  Jorge Delahoya was pronounced dead at 3:03 a.m. July 8 at the emergency room in Provena United Samaritaritans Medical Center.  He was found by friends non-responsive in the pool at Sunset Cove Apartment Complex.  An Autopsy performed today revealed that his cause of death was drowning.  The Danville Police Department and the Vermilion County Coroner's Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.  Toxicology results are pending.

Number of heat-related deaths in Chicago up to 18

CHICAGO (AP) -- Authorities say the number of heat-related deaths in the Chicago area has risen to 18, despite the cooler temperatures.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Cook County medical examiner's office determined Sunday that eight more people died from heat-related causes, adding to the 10 deaths previously confirmed Saturday.

Chicago saw three consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures in the past week.

The newspaper reports that heat wave that affected two-thirds of the nation has tied or broken nearly 3,400 maximum and minimum temperature records.

Among those included in the area's heat-related deaths are a 100-year-old woman, 65-year-old woman, a 53-year-old man, a 46-year-old woman and an unidentified man believed to be about 30 years old.

The National Weather Service is predicting cooler weather for the next few days.
