Indiana HS Football scores 8/17/12

In the Battle of Newton County, North Newton jumped out to a 16-0 lead, then South Newton scored 20 points of their own to take a 4 point lead into the 4th quarter, but then the Spartans scored 17 more unanswered points to take the 37-20 win over the Rebels.  Senior Chad Schultz, the workhorse for North Newton, rushed for 122 yards on 24 carries, had TD runs of 9 and 59 yards, along with an 80-yard punt return for a TD.

Also contributing for the Spartans, Jesse Bigger with a 1st quarter safety; a 60-yard-punt return for a TD by Vince Duminie, and a 1 yd TD run from Jeremy Jones. 

For the Rebels in defeat, senior Austin Drinsky with a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD, along with a 3 yd TD run.  And another 3-yard TD run by Ricky Montemayer for the last Rebel score.  The Rebels will play Friday at Frontier, who have their lost their last 11 games.

In other area games Friday from Indiana:  Lafayette Central Catholic, the 3-time defending Class A State Champions, cruised to a 52-7 win over Delphi.  Brad Schrader scoring 4 TDs, Andrew Hubertz with 2, as the Knights win their 46th straight game.  That is the 2nd longest streak in Indiana high school history, and currently 3rd longest in the country.

West Central 41, Culver 21:  Michael Hamilton 215 yards rushing, 3 TDs, and threw for another score to lead the Trojans.

North White 37, Taylor 15:  Busy night for the Vikings’ Colin Hileman; he ran 96 yards for a game-opening TD; threw a 16-yard TD pass, ran 58 yards for another score.  And finished with 158 yards on 3 carries, was 3 of 7 passing for 69 yards, and led the D with 16 tackles.

North Montgomery 32, Benton Central 6;Nick Fischbach returned a blocked punt 2 yards for the Bison’s only score. 

Carroll Flora 41, Tri-County 19; Fountain Central 21, Southmont 18, junior Jack Bolin’s 1 yard TD run won it late for the Mustangs.

Clinton Prairie 34, Frontier 8:  Cole Fesler & Luke Cain connected on a 95-yard TD pass in the 4th for the only Falcon score.

In other scores:  Winamac 26, Knox 9; Caston 28, Triton 20.  And a couple of upsets Friday:  Lewis Cass shocked the #2 ranked team in Class A Indiana, Pioneer, 33-12.  Boone Grove, in only their 2nd year of varsity play, gave Wheeler its first regular season loss since 2007, the final 30-12.  The Wolves’ Cody Poynter rushed for 212 yards on 26 carries, scoring all 4 of his team’s TDs.

N. Newton's Schultz Player of Week 8/18/12

The First Trust & Savings Bank in Watseka and Clifton Player of the Week (for the week ending 8/18/12) is SENIOR CHAD SCHULTZ OF THE NORTH NEWTON SPARTANS.

Chad, a workhorse on offense and defense, got his senior year off to a nice start, leading the Spartans to an impressive opening night victory over one of Indiana’s top Class A teams, South Newton.  Chad rushed for 122 yards on 24 carries.  He ran a punt back 80 yards for a score in the first quarter, and sealed the Spartan win in the 4th with TD runs of 9 and 59 yards.

Walker & Gentry Return from London Olympics

Rick Walker is a former Olympic hopeful who had his dreams of qualifying in the trials dashed when the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Games in Moscow.  The Kankakee Eastridge High graduate is now head coach for the Southern Illinois University swimming team.

He coached Egyptian distance swimmer Mazen Aziz, who swam collegiately for Walker at SIU. He finished 24th with a time of 1:54:33.

Matt Gentry, an Oregon native who married his college sweetheart and moved to Kankakee, finished fifth in the 74-kilogram freestyle wrestling event as a member of the Canadian wrestling team. He nearly forced a third and decisive period against heavily favored U.S. sensation Jordan Burroughs, who swept through four matches en route to winning the gold medal.

Gentry said before the meet that the Summer Games would mark an end to his competitive wrestling career,which includes a 2004 NCAA national championship.

WGFA Sports' Tom Conn is on JEOPARDY 10/11/12!

WGFA sports broadcaster and Saturday morning sports show host Tom Conn is FINALLY a contestant on the long-running TV quiz show "JEOPARDY!"  He has auditioned nearly every year since high school, but this past January, he did well enough on the 50-question online test to be invited to an in-person audition in Chicago in May.  One month later, Sony Pictures in California called him to come to an August 1st taping to compete!

While he is not allowed by Sony to reveal what happened, you can tune in to find out for yourself...on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2012.  Check your local listings to watch Tom in action!  CONGRATULATIONS, TOM on finally making it on the show!
