Traffic stop leads to foot pursuit

Kankakee Police found themselves involved in a foot pursuit after a traffic stop (Sunday) on West Merchant Street. 33-year-old Marcus Thomas of Chicago was arrested on weapons and drug charges after fleeing from a vehicle police had stopped for a traffic violation. The D-J reports while taking to the driver and passenger during the 1 a.m. traffic stop, the officer smelled the odor of burnt cannabis in the vehicle. When asked to step out of the vehicle, Thomas ran but was apprehended after a short pursuit. A loaded pistol was found in a nearby yard. Thomas was found to be wearing a bullet-proof vest and was in possession of a suspected controlled substance.

He faces charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, armed habitual offender, felon in possession of a gun and possession of a controlled substance.
