Safety stressed during harvest season

This is Farm Safety & Health Week. Many farm operations will see harvest activity really pick up. That leads to more farm traffic on roadways, longer hours for farm operations, and good reason for all of us (non-farm and everyday motorists) to exercise more patience in sharing the roadways and slow down. Moving that farm equipment from field to field can take time and today’s larger equipment requires more safety. It’s usually good reason to remind people about slowing down and being more mindful about the possibility of coming up fast behind slow-moving equipment.

This third week of September is recognized as National Farm Safety and Health Week. The Illinois Department of Labor is reminding people to be cautious. “We just want to make sure people at the end of the day go home, both motoring traffic and the farmers,” said Michael Kleinik, Illinois Department of Labor Director. “There’s cars that go flying through those intersections every day and a semi is up to eighty thousand pounds hauling grain. You can’t stop that on a dime, so watching out for cars is ever so important.

Farmers always reminded about proper display of SMV emblems on their equipment.
