It’s been in the planning stage for years. Now, the downtown Kankakee Metro Centre Bus Station appears ready to happen.

A $4-million project will find a huge transfer station built along East Chestnut Street, between Schuyler Avenue and Dearborn Av. The $4-million cost will be shared by the state of Illinois and the federal government. Construction bids will be awarded in the fall, if all goes as planned. The new transfer hub will be built in 2021. The project has been delayed due to funding snafus with the government. Now, the federal CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid Relief & Economic Act) has made the project-funding move forward. The plan is be directed to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
