Kankakee house fire does $70,000 damage

Kankakee Fire Chief Damon Schuldt is stressing the importance of working fire alarms following a Sunday morning residential fire. Smoke detectors activated, alerting the occupants so they were able to escape unharmed.

Firemen answered the call to the 600-block of South Chicago Avenue about 1:30 am. Schuldt reported extensive damage to the interior rear portion and second-floor of the house. Damage estimates were listed at about $70,000. No foul play is suspected. The cause is under investigation.
