Jail inmate died of overdose

Autopsy and toxicology results show an Iroquois County Jail inmate died of an overdose. 24-year-old Andre Maiden was one of two jail inmates who died within a day of each other … while in custody.

Maiden died August 26 from overdose of Heroin and Fentanyl, according to Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum. Toxicology reports were returned and the death certificate is now on file. Fancher died at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
Earlier, Cheatum reported, autopsies on both Maiden and Jason Fancher ruled out physical injuries and nothing conclusive was found which would lead to sudden death. Fancher’s toxicology results are not yet available.

The investigation into the two men’s deaths is ongoing by the Illinois State Police and the state Department of Corrections.

Maiden and Fancher were jailed for separate homicide cases in Iroquois County.

The two inmates were found unresponsive in their cells….a day apart… sparking a protest outside the Jail and Courthouse. Protesters demanded answers as to what happened with both inmates inside the facility.

State Police were called in to conduct an investigation, at the request of the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office.
