Iroquois County Sheriff Dept to police Gilman and Onarga

Two Iroquois County communities are in line to get law enforcement patrol help from the local sheriff’s department. An agreement is pending contract approval yet to get the OK from the parties involved.

The Iroquois County Board (Tuesday) voted to hire two additional sheriff’s deputies, contingent upon the signing of a contract between the County and the City of Gilman and the Village of Onarga. The motion is based on the two communities covering the two deputies salaries with a $21,000 allotment for the County paid thru the Public Safety Tax.

Sheriff Derek Hagen told the Board hiring two additional deputies would maintain the police force not to be detrimental to the rest of the county’s needs. Financing is the issue, considering cuts to the sheriff’s department in years past.
County Board Chairman John Shure said this could be an example for other communities in that law enforcement could be upgraded, but the towns would help cover the cost.
