Gun violence addressed at special meeting of Kankakee Council

Public safety issues were discussed in detail at a special meeting of the Kankakee City Council Tuesday.  Gun violence, in particular, has law enforcement under the microscope as city leaders are being pressured to find solutions. Several public comments, addressed to the administration, suggested ideas and also criticized the city for not acting on tips and taking call-in reports seriously.

Police Chief Frank Kosman reported progress on having a gun shot detection program in place, sensers to identify where shots are being fired so police can prioritize problem areas. Deputy-Chief Willie Hunt said department members are being re-assigned to focus on problem neighborhoods where gang activity gathers.  Hunt also explained the Nuisance Abatement has been worked over the years and needs to be enforced....

Alderman Larry Osenga, a former police officer, also suggested Saturation Patrols which have been effective in the past.  They identify the people and locations and help police re-direct their efforts.....

Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong complimented the police for their efforts in attending the meeting to provide information.  She said "this is a complex issue that calls for a total community effort.....

Alderman Carl Brown also said the meeting brought good ideas and input.  But he also adds, "we all have to sail the boat in the same direction" to get positive results.
