Coal City Tornado Anniversary

Monday marked the five year anniversary of the Coal City EF-3 tornado that left behind more than $13 million in damages. The tornado swept the community in a southeasterly direction destroying several homes in its path.

Repairs to the Coal City Fire Station building were completed the following year. Damages exceeded more than $1 million. Coal City officials reported more than 850 structures were affected. 106 were deemed uninhabitable needing extensive repairs and 60 were total losses. The cost of tornado debris cleanup for Coal City was more $1 million. Officials estimate around $13 million in damages from the EF-3 tornado.

The NWS reported the tornado was on the ground for more than 16 miles. But just a handful of people suffered injuries and no fatalities.
