Sam Shreffler’s fireworks display at Ashkum was as spectacular as ever (Saturday night), but an explosion injured one of the crew-members setting off the fireworks. A large projectile struck one of the workers, causing what’s been reported as a possible skull fracture. The victim was struck in the head and torso. Ashkum Fire and Riverside Ambulance, already on stand-by at the scene, immediately tended to the victim and had him taken to Riverside Hospital.

The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating. Ashkum Fire reported the malfunction involved an explosion in the tube, not a launch. The accident happened at about 9:43 pm.
