Iroquois County: Papineau trial opens in Watseka

A 2014 traffic death in Iroquois County finds a Watseka man standing trial this week.  20-year-old Dakota Papineau is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving.  A crash west of Watseka killed David Senesac of Watseka.  Senesac's six-year-old grandson was also seriously injured.

A jury was seated and opening statements by counsel were delivered.  Testimony will continue today (Wednesday) before Circuit Judge James Kinzer.

Several friends who were with Papineau the evening of July 23, 2014 are expected to testify.  The traffic crash occurred at 1900N and 1600E.

State's Attorney Jim Devine and his assistant, Karea Macz, are prosecuting.  Papineau is represented by Bourbonnais attorney Tony Brasel and his son, Trey.

Devine told the jury the accident was due to Papineau's reckless behavior behind the wheel.  Brasel said he won't dispute much of the evidence, but he called it a "tragic accident."

There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol.  In fact, results from the state crime lab came back negative for both alcohol and drugs.

Kankakee County opposing GLBR

Kankakee County is officially on record as opposing the proposed Great Lakes Basin Railroad. The County Board (Tuesday) gave its OK, approving a letter be sent to the Transportation Service Board stating opposing the project that would bring a railroad hub from Cook County and consume acres of farm ground from Manteno west.

The Farm Bureau and other ag organizations have stated their opposition as well. Property owners are on record against the project that would wipe out too many acres of farm ground and eliminate ag jobs.

Eleven counties, including those from east central Illinois and northwest Indiana, are unified in opposition to the project.

State Representative Kate Cloonen is backing the opposing view too. She held public hearings to get input..... #39

No individuals or groups have spoken in favor.

Vermilion County preps for return of “Balloons over Vermilion”

Balloons Over Vermilion is back ! The popular event returns Saturday, after an absence, to light the sky over the Vermilion Airport.

Hot air balloons helped highlight the Danville Dans Baseball game last Saturday night. Ronald McDonald threw out the first pitch. And Thursday, the Danville Boat Club will bring back the ‘Splash and Dash’ involving hot air balloons that will fly over Lake Vermilion.

A Balloon School is featured Saturday (July 16) at the Vermilion Regional Airport. Balloon pilots volunteer to educate visitors about topics like the fabric that makes up balloons, making balloon baskets, what actually makes them fly, and weather conditions.

Balloons Over Vermilion will feature thirty-three hot air balloons. Flights, of course, depend on weather conditions.
