Storms Produce Heavy Rain, Large Hail

There’s been reports of hail damage in central-Illinois today. Severe thunderstorms rolled across the area late Wednesday and overnight brought flash flooding along with some hail damage. Hail measuring 2-inches in diameter was reported near Champaign County. Trained weather spotters also reported three-quarter inch hail.

By 6 pm Wednesday, three and a half inches of rain had been reported near Rossville.  A trained weather spotter there reported one-and-a-half inches of rain fell during a one-hour period.  Earlier in the afternoon Wednesday the National Weather Service issued a special advisory for southern Vermilion County because of strong thunderstorms that included nickel-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 55 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, the Weather Service was warning motorists to be on the lookout for the possibility of flooded roadways.  And remember you should never drive through an area where water is running across a road.
