Firefighter injured in Melvin blaze

MELVIN — A firefighter escaped serious injury overnight when a floor collapsed inside a burning bar and grill. A snowplow driver called in the fire at Bubba’s Bar & Grill on Main Street.

The Roberts firefighter was taken to Gibson Area Hospital, where he was treated and later released.

The fireman fell through a weakened floor into the basement. Other firefighters lowered a ladder so he could climb out.

Firefighters cleared the scene about five hours later, but the state fire marshal’s office was called to investigate. Firemen from Melvin, Roberts, Sibley and Gibson City answered the call around 3:30 am.
