The President of Danville Area Community College says a new tobacco-free policy on campus is off to a good start.  Alice Jacobs says it not only creates a healthier environment, but also a safer one.

Dr. Jacobs says nearly all of the administrators at Danville Area Community College are considered greeters.  So if they spot someone using tobacco products they will explain the new policy to those individuals. The DACC Administration has been preparing for the tobacco-free change for the past 18 months.

President Jacobs adds the policy will allow for a cleaner campus. In a survey completed by 350 students in a cross-section of classes on the DACC campus last Fall, over 45-percent of respondents said they strongly agreed with efforts to make the campus tobacco free.  Nearly 30-percent said they somewhat agreed.  And over 85-percent of the students responding to the poll said they strongly or somewhat agreed with the statement: ‘‘Daily exposure to even small amounts of second hand smoke is a serious health risk.’’
