Wal-Mart Donates Bikes for Celebrate Students Night

Watseka, IL – The Watseka Wal-Mart store donated three bicycles for the “Celebrate Students” Night held on May 8, 2012 at Watseka Community High School.

This event showcases the many accomplishments of the Unit 9 students.  All Unit 9 students who attended the event were eligible for the free bicycle drawing.  The event also highlights the many activities associated with the Coordinated School Health Grant which partners the Ford-Iroquois Public Health Department with Unit 9 Schools in order to promote physical activity and good nutrition in the local schools.

During the event, students were provided with free nutritious snacks that were sized according to appropriate portion size.  Dee Ann Schippert, Community and Schools Coordinator, for the Ford-Iroquois Public Health Department, said this is an annual event that students, parents and community members enjoy.  Schippert said the goal is to teach students that being physically active and eating properly can be fun.  “We don’t want students to think about good nutrition and physical activity as a burden,” said Schippert.  “Eating right and being physically active can be fun and when incorporated into their daily lives will immensely impact their health as an adult in a positive way.”

Winners of the bicycles were:  Anna Parmenter, Bricen Walwer and Courtney Thompson
