A Watseka man is headed to prison for 50 years. 30-year-old Brian Garrett was sentenced Friday in Iroquois Circuit Court for the 2009 double-murders of Robert Wood and Ralph Elsey.
Garrett pleaded guilty to 1st and 2nd degree murder charges for killing the men at the Sheldon home the two victims shared.
State’s Attorney Jim Devine said Judge Gordon Lustfeldt made sure Garrett understood the sentence……

The case had been continued several times over the last two-plus years. Garrett had been ruled unfit to stand trial. But after several evaluations, court psychiatrists determined the defendant was able to comprehend the case against him.
Garrett was represented by public defender Dale Strough.
Devine said Garrett was facing Life in prison, if convicted, before agreeing to the plea ……..

The 48-year-old Wood and 62-year-old Elsey were killed June 6, 2009 at their home at 270 W. Depot Street in Sheldon. Garrett has been in custody since June 8, 2009. He’ll await transfer to the Department of Corrections.
