Loda woman dies in crash in New York

FREMONT, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities say a 69-year-old Loda woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred on a snow-covered western New York highway.

Killed was 69-year-old Sharon Thompson. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband when it rolled down an embankment. The Steuben County Sheriff's Office say 79-year-old Raymond Thompson of Loda was towing a U-Haul trailer Monday evening when he tried to change lanes on the eastbound side of Interstate 86. His vehicle hit a car near Hornell, about 60 miles south of Rochester.

Deputies say the trailer jackknifed, causing both the trailer and Thompson's vehicle to crash and overturn down an embankment.

Thompson was taken to the Hornell hospital, where he's being treated for head and rib injuries.

Thompson's wife, Sharon Thompson, was pinned in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say the crash was caused by the slippery roads and driver error.
