Visitors invited to OCM for Advocacy Day Aug. 12
The Iroquois County Historical Society extends an invitation to the general public to visit the Old Courthouse Museum, 103 W. Cherry, Watseka, on Advocacy Day, which is Monday, Aug. 12. A reception to celebrate Advocacy Day will take place from10:30-11:30 a.m., with State Representative Josh Harms being the special guest. Advocacy Day is a great time for the public to visit local museums throughout the state and rediscover the treasures of the past, just like what the Old Iroquois County Courthouse offers. The Old Iroquois County Courthouse was constructed in 1866, with an addition built in 1881 and another added in 1927. In the early 1960ís, Iroquois County resident Katherine Clifton bequeathed in her will a large sum of money to the county and a site upon which to build a new courthouse. The old courthouse was advertised for sale and fell into disuse. In 1967, during the Centennial celebration of Watseka, the Iroquois County Historical Society was organized and began to circulate petitions throughout the county requesting the old courthouse not be sold. The petitions were approved by the county board of supervisors and the old courthouse re-opened as a museum the same year. Today, a visit to the old courthouse is a step back in time where you can visit the old county jail, see recreations of an old-time back porch; visit a Victorian parlor, old time general store, post office, one-room schoolhouse and more. It is a place where you can stroll past showcase after showcase featuring one-of-a-kind treasures of a bygone era, with something of interest for nearly everyone. The displays include fossil and mineral collections, Indian artifacts, the latest fashions of the Victorian era, a collection of over 100 antique dolls and medical instruments from the pioneer days.
