Frequently Asked Voting Questions

If you did not vote early and want to cast your vote today, the traditional Election Day, here is what you need to know to avoid any problems:

Q. What time do polls open on Tuesday?

A. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Q. What do I do if an election judge says I am not registered to vote although I did register?

A. This could happen for a number of reasons. Maybe you’ve moved since the last election or you haven’t voted in several elections. It could also be because the record number of new voters have caused a backlog and your name may not show up yet on voter rolls if you registered just before deadline.

First, make sure poll workers have checked the inactive voters’ list if you haven’t voted in a while. If your name is not there either, don’t despair. You can fill out a provisional ballot that election judges will review after Election Day. By then your voter-registration form will have been processed, providing proof that you are eligible and your vote will count.

Q. What happens if I forget my ID?

A. Illinois does not require a photo ID to vote, but it’s a good idea to have it just in case.

Q. What if my eligibility is challenged? The Republican Party might challenge voters registered by some activist groups they claim have signed up fictitious people and those not eligible to vote, such as felons.

A. Having your driver’s license or state ID handy will avoid this kind of problem.

Q. Can I bring anything inside the polling place to help me vote?

A. You can bring newspaper endorsements or sample ballots into the voting booth.

Q. What if I make a mistake on my ballot?

A. You can receive a new ballot if you make a mistake or change your mind.

Q. What happens if I am still in line when the polls close?

A. If you were in line by 7 p.m., you can vote.

Spider Eats Bird

The pictures show the spider with its long black legs wrapped around the body of a dead bird suspended in its web.

The startling images were reportedly taken in Atheron, close to Queensland’s tropical north.

Despite their unlikely subject matter, the pictures appear to be real.

Joel Shakespeare, head spider keeper at the Australian Reptile Park, said the spider was a Golden Orb Weaver.

“Normally they prey on large insects… it’s unusual to see one eating a bird,” he told ninemsn.com.

Mr Shakepeare said he had seen Golden Orb Weaver spiders as big as a human hand but the northern species in tropical areas were known to grow larger.

Queensland Museum identified the bird as a native finch called the Chestnut-breasted Mannikin.
