Special Weather Statement…Iroquois, Ford County; Illiana

…Significant snowfall likely from late Monday through Tuesday…

A strong storm system will spread snow from west to east across the region on Monday. Light snow will become likely across north central Illinois Monday afternoon…and across northeast Illinois Monday evening. Snowfall intensity will increase Monday evening…with significant snow expected to fall through Monday night and Tuesday.

The widespread snowfall should taper off Tuesday evening but lake enhanced and lake effect snow may occur over northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana well into Tuesday night with additional accumulation occurring in these areas.

At this point the exact timing…location and specific snowfall totals are uncertain. However…it currently appears that there is a good chance of at least 4 inches of snowfall across the area…with a chance of 6 or more inches accumulating from late Monday through Tuesday evening. Several inches of lake effect snow are possible Tuesday night in far northeast Illinois and across Northwest Indiana.

The storm will result from the merger of a system currently dropping southward over northern Manitoba…and a system moving eastward over the Desert Southwest. These two systems are forecast to combine over the Central Plains on Monday…with the resulting storm system moving across the mid Mississippi Valley during Tuesday.

This winter storm will likely have significant impacts on travel conditions across the region from Monday into early Wednesday.
Later forecasts will have more specific information as the storm system develops and approaches the region.
