SLICK ROADS CLOSE AREA SCHOOLS

WX > A Freezing Rain Advisory expired early today, but area roads are slick. Rain likely after Noon, high near 34. Freezing drizzle tonight.

 

> Many area schools are closed due to slippery road conditions. Overnight freezing rain left most secondary routes and city side streets very hazardous. Extreme caution is the word today if you’re out and about.

> All schools in Kankakee School District 111 are closed again for day #3 of the teachers strike. There are 5500 students affected by the walk-out. The two sides have a negotiating session scheduled today.

> Iroquois County Judge James Kinzer has sentenced a Crescent City man to 90 days in jail after a plea agreement in Circuit Court. 19-year-old Kyle Duits (Doots) plead guilty to Harboring a Runaway. He aided his 15-year-old runaway girlfriend by hiding her from family and friends while authorities searched for the Martinton girl for about a week last year. Sheriff’s Police located the girl at Duits’ home where he lived with his mother. 40-year-old Joanne Duits will stand trial in February for Harboring a Runaway.

Kyle Duits was also facing a charge of Criminal Sexual Abuse. That charge was dropped in exchange for the plea. He was also fined $500 and given one year of conditional discharge.

> The trial of a Kankakee woman who placed a bogus police call that resulted in a serious injury to a police officer begins today. Shontay Lumpkin is accused ot placing the call November 7th. Deputy Dave Stukenborg’s squad overturned while enroute to the fake call. The tire blew out while respoinding to the emergency.

Meanwhile—a benefit for the officer is still planned for January 30th, but the event has been moved from the Aroma Park Boat Club to the Quality Inn in Bradley.
