- A 23-year-old Bourbonnais woman suffered life-threatening injuries early Sunday in a two-car, head-on colission near Manteno. Bethany Burns is charged with DUI of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was listed in critical condition at Riverside Hospital after Manteno firefighters cut her from the wreckage of her car. Two other women in the second car, 75-yr-old Catherine Yunker and 67-yr-old Elizabeth Bingen, both of Orland Park, were transported to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Illinois State Police report Burns was northbound on U-S Route 45 (near Kankakee County Road 11500 N) at 4:46 am. Her car veered into the southbound lane, slamming the Yunker car nearly head-on. Manteno, Bourbonnais and Peotone fire responded along with Manteno Police, Sheriff’s Polcie and state police.
- Gary, IN police believe a crash that killed a Crown Point woman who taught in Merrillville and her 8-year-old son was caused by a drunken driver in another car. The accident happened at 10:45 p.m. Friday at a Gary intersection. Merilyn Bouler, 39, and her son, Jontay Barber, 8, died in the accident. Bouler’s 10-year-old son, Landon Evans, also was a passenger in her car. He was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital and was in stable condition. Police have arrested the driver of the second car, Felix Ross, 27, of Gary. Ross’ blood-alcohol concentration was 0.14. Witnesses say the vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed, disregarded a traffic light and collided with the car driven by Merilyn Bouler.
- A Chicago truck driver was ticketed for improper lane use at 4:56 a.m. Saturday by Illinois State Police after the man lost control of his semitrailer, which overturned in the ditch along Interstate 57 just south of Ashkum, spilling a load of glass mason jars. Truck driver Igor Mykoliv, 21, of Chicago, was not injured, but the 2000 semitrailer suffered extensive damage.
- The State’s Attorney offices in Iroquois and Ford counties, and Champaign and LaSalle counties are expected to file burglary charges against two south-suburban men for a series of break-ins involving cell phones. 25-yr-old Allan New of Harvey and 33-yr-old Robert Crader of Hazelcrest were arrested in Peru, IL when caught in the act of burglarizing a cell phone shop October 30th. Authorities believe the men are also responsible for break-ins at a Casey’s General Store in Paxton and a convenience store in Clifton October 26th. Both suspects are jailed in LaSalle County.
- A surprise hug and a kiss isn’t what Iroquois County Circuit Clerk Arlene Hines expected Friday. But that’s exactly what she got—from State Senator Dan Rutherford. > The 53rd District Senator congratulated Mrs. Hines for her upcoming retirement while recognizing her 58 years in county government. Arlene, as she’s fondly known by most, retires from her post at the end of the month.
- Rutherford also met with ESDA officials and the administration at the Gilman Nursing Home to make arrangements to distribute energy-efficient ligdrive ?”ht bulbs. Rutherford explained the area served by Ameren will receive the light bulbs. > The utility company responded initially during the January and February flooding, with an emergency-distribution to assist people in need.
- Senator Rutherford also visited with 5th-graders at Crescent City Grade School, where he answered some typical questions from young people like “Have you ever met the President” and “What kind of a car do you drive ?”
