- A new queen crowned at the Gladiolus Festival Wednesday. Katherine Newberry gets the honor. She’ll reign over several activities at the annual festival in Momence. Sydney Reams was crowned the princess.
- The 4th annual “Honor the Chief Day/Orange & Blue Festival” at Gibson City is planned for Friday and Saturday, August 15th and 16th. Mayor Dan Dickey invites the public to share in family entertainment. Visitors can meet Chief Illiniwek from 4-6 pm on Saturday, August 16th.
- The Chicago Bears play their first pre-season game tonight. The Bears host Kansas City. Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman will share quarterback duties; Orton gets the start. At Bears camp in Bourbonnais, much of the attention has been on the QB debate. But the coaches say they’re concerned about the depleted ranks of the offensive line.
- Newton County, Indiana sheriff’s police are investigating a sexual assault report. It happened Wednesday morning. The victim reported a white male in his early 30s, about 6-4 with a thin build assaulted the victim, forcing the victim and two others into a vehicle. The man allegedly drove the victims to a rural area and later returned them to the scene near Morocco. Anyone with info about a man driving a silver or tan, small 2-door car with what’s believed a Michigan plate and tape covering the rear passenger window to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s dept at 219-474-5661.
- Comed and Ameren utility crews are getting outside help to restore power to several thousand storm victims. Tornadoes and straight-line winds hit the Illiana area hard Monday night and Tuesday morning.
- A public hearing on the proposed closing of the Pontiac Correctional Center has been changed from next Tuesday to Wednesday, August 20th. The 5 pm meeting at the Pontiac High School was changed due to Governor Blagojevich calling lawmakers back to Springfield for a Special Session. The General Assembly Convenes August 12th and 13th. The DOC hearing is pushed to August 20th.
