Treasure Hunters Roadshow makes local stops…. Internet safety, “Are You Smarter Than Your Internet Blogger ?”….. FEMA says No again to more Illinois flood damage…..

A Freeze Warning was lifted this morning after a 31-degree reading overnight. Today—Sunny, high near 52.

–Check out more area news on WGFA news links.–

  • FEMA is telling people in Illinois “no” again. People who lost their homes, or just the possessions inside of it, are being denied help for flood damage. The federal disaster agency said “no” to the state’s request for help from the floods that swept across southern Illinois in March. Fifteen counties were affected. Hundreds of homes were damaged, 39 were destroyed, and on eperson died because of high water. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency officials say they’ll conduct their own damage assessment to try to find anything left off the federal list.
  • Southern Illinois’ denial is the second in the state because of this year’s flooding. FEMA originally turned down requests in Iroquois and Livingston counties, before a second damage count showed more damage and convinced Washington officials to help.
  • Wet weather has pushed Illinois corn growers behind schedule. It’s too wet for many farmers to get into the fields. Brad Schwab of the USDA reports just six percent of the state’s corn crop is in the ground. Last year at this time, farmers had 29-percent planted.
  • Spiking food prices are pinching Illinois Food Banks. Officials are trying to find ways to stretch their dollars and menus. Read more on WGFA news links.
  • The Treasure Hunters Roadshow is setting up shop in Watseka and Bradley this week. Representatives are helping folks identify and value antiques and collectibles. Visitors can sit down with Roadshow reps at the Super 8 Motel Conference Center in Watseka and at the Quality Inn in Bradley. Hours each day through Saturday, May 3rd are from 9 am ’til 6 pm. WGFA is broadcasting “live” from the Roadshow today, Wednesday and Thursday from 9-10 am. Roadshow rep Jeff Parsons joins Justin Kaiser in the WGFA Studio Friday morning at 9 am.

Parents of children 4th grade and up can learn about the internet and what their kids may be up to when online. Three 30-minute workshops are offered beginning at 6 pm. Illinois State Police, the I-Kan Regional Office of Education, and the Iroquois County Juvenile Justice Council are behind the effort.

–more area news on the WGFA news links.–

  • It was a scary situation in Rossville yesterday. Police are advising parents and other communities about an attempted abduction. A 7th grade female student reported to authorities that a man in a white van tried to lure her to his vehicle. It happened right in front of the Rossville-Alvin grade school as classes were dismissing. The girl reported the man, in his 40s, rolled up to the school and tried to lure her with candy. The man cursed at the girl when she ignored his advances. The suspect was described as a white male in the 40s with dirty blonde hair and a scruffy beard.
  • A Wisconsin man is facing felony charges following a traffic death that claimed the life of a former Iroquois County woman. 20-year-old Ashley Marcotte, an ex-Loda resident, died from injuries suffered when she fell off a car and was run over. • A narcotics investigation by the Watseka Enforcement Team and Grant Park Police Department nets authorities three arrests. 54-yr-old Kenneth Kroesch and 59-year-old Wally Urban of Watseka were arrested in a 30-minute time span Thursday. DON’T MISS OUT: THERE’S STILL ENOUGH TIME TO APPLY FOR DISASTER ASSISTANCE

Illinois residents and business owners living in Iroquois and Livingston counties have only two weeks left to apply for federal disaster assistance.

May 6 is the last day that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will accept telephone or on-line applications for Individual Assistance.

Homeowners, renters and businesses also must submit loan applications for physical damage by that date to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for disaster-related losses to real and personal property. If they do not return the SBA applications, they may not be considered for further assistance.

Federal and state disaster recovery officials urge eligible residents affected by the Jan. 7 through March 14 storms and flooding to apply as soon as possible by calling the toll-free registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Speech-or hearing-impaired applicants may call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

Individuals also may register for disaster assistance at the FEMA Web site www.fema.gov.

Applicants who have questions about the disaster assistance programs or questions about the status of their previously filed applications should continue to use FEMA’s toll-free Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. For SBA assistance, residents may call the SBA Customer Service Center at
1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for the hearing-impaired).

To date, 1,255 Illinois residents have applied for disaster assistance. More than $8.8 million in disaster funds have been approved for individuals affected by the disaster. That includes more than $3.5 million in disaster loans from SBA.

FEMA coordinates the Federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terrorism.

For more information on Illinois disaster recovery, visit www.fema.gov or http://www.state.il.us/iema.gov.
