BUSY WEEKEND FOR AREA POLICE….JUDGE TRIES TO QUELL RUMORS, ISSUES STATEMENT…. INDIANA MAYOR FACES FELONY CHARGES….. NO RATE FREEZE, YET…. WGFA NEWS NOTES ON THIS FINAL DAY OF APRIL.

HIGH NEAR 84 TODAY ON THIS APRIL 30th.  THERE IS a 30% CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND T-STORMS TODAY, TONIGHT AND TUESDAY.    

  • A Flood Warning continues for the Iroquois and Kankakee Rivers here in Illiana.  Minor flooding is occuring and forecast.
  • Iroquois Circuit Judge Gordon Lustfeldt says he’ll stand beside his wife in full support.  The Watseka judge issued a weekend statement concerning his wife Deanna’s alleged involvement in an embezzelment from a local bank, where she was employed.  Lustfeldt said in a prepared statement ‘the allegations against his wife are a complete surprise to him, his family and friends.’  He said ‘what lies ahead is unknown, but it remains his duty to take care of his wife and family.’  The case is under investigation.
  • In Fulton County, a Township Supervisor is charged with embezzling $75,000 from the Putnam Township General Fund.  39-yr-old Julie Foster is accused of taking money over a four year period and using it for personal expenses.  The U-S Attorney’s Office says as part of her scheme, she also destroyed township records to cover her tracks.  Foster is the second Fulton County official this month to be charged with fraud.
  • In Indiana–the mayor of Monticello is under arrest after an investigation by the Indiana State Police.  Troopers arrested 71-yr-old Robert Fox on a warrant for 39 charges of theft, all class D felonies.  Fox allegedly submitted false milage reimbursement claims totalling more than 24-hundred dollars betwen 2004 and 2006. 
  • Area law enforcement agencies investigated weekend accidents, involving DUI charges.  Details today on WGFA NEWS.  Drug charges were also filed in Ford County against two men following a state police traffic stop on I-57. 
  • Farmers are expected to make up lost time with planting after last week’s rain.  The combination of rain delays and cold weather could make for longer hours in the next few weeks.

Cancellations - Reschedule 4/27/07

The Milford H.S. Boys Baseball game that was scheduled against Christ Lutheran H.S. in Buckley for SATURDAY 4/28 has been cancelled.   However, the Milford H.S. Boys Baseball game against Armstrong Potomac WILL BE PLAYED this afternoon starting at 4:30pm in Potomac.

Watseka H.S. Varsity Boys Baseball at Grant Park has been cancelled for today, Friday 4/27.  Will not be rescheduled.

Watseka H.S. JV Baseball versus Peotone at Watseka has been cancelled for SATURDAY 4/28 due to standing water on the ball diamond.  Will not  be rescheduled.

A TORNADO FLIPS A COP CAR ? …. LOCAL AREA ESCAPES SEVERE WEATHER….. wATSEKA MAN FACES THEFT CHARGE….. CHIEF CONTROVERSY MAKES MORE NEWS……

  • A sheriff’s deputy in Indiana escaped serious injury when her patrol car was reportedly flipped over a fence by a tornado. LaPorte County sheriff’s police say some violent weather hit the area last evening.  The NWS said the storm cell that hit LaPorte County was among several T-storm waves that moved across the state.  There was a tornado Watch, but no damage was reported anywhere else.
  • A severe T-storm Warning was issued for Iroquois County, but it was short-lived.  The NWS cancelled the Warning 15-minutes before the alert was supposed to end.  The cell was exepected to produce hail,and winds at 60-70 mph.  The Crescent City area was among a few towns reporting some pea-sized hail between 5 and 6 pm.
  • Eight people were killed Thursday in a chain-reaction accident on the Iniana Toll Road near South Bend.  All of the dead were in passenger vehicles, including five in a single vehicle.  Three semis and four passenger vehicles were involved.
  • 35-yr-old Daniel Wright of Watseka is facing charges of Theft and Deceptive Practice.  He turned himself in at the Iroquois County jail yesterday.  A warrant had been issued for his arrest.   
  • An 8-yr-old warrant finds a now 28-yr-old woman charged with Illegal Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor.  Iroquois County sheriff’s polcie returned Thursday from the Vermilion County jail with Amanda Abbott of Westville.  She was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
  • “The Daily Show” is producing a shot on the controversy surrounding Chief Illiniwek. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” spent time in Champaign gathering info for the spiff.  No word on when the show will air.

  • Little Iroquois Conference Track Meet at Piper City has been canceled for today.
  • IW Baseball and Softball games have been cancelled for today.  Make-up game this Friday at 4:30 at Tri-Point.
  • Watseka varsity boys baseball game with CPCI has been cancelled.  Make up game Friday May 5th at 4:00 in Watseka.
  • The Glen Raymond Junior High Track Meet versus Herscher and St. Anne has been cancelled.

Parts of Central Illinois were hit with severe storms Wednesday, but no damage was reported.  Funnel clouds were reported in Logan County.  Spotters saw some touching down in Christian County too. 

Flash Flood Warning in effect for the Kankakee River at Shelby, IN.  Moderate flooding is forecast today until further notice.

Carl Springer of Kankakee was jailed in Watseka Wednesday.  The 28-yr-old was arrested on an Iroquois County warrant for failing to appear on a DUI charge.  Sheriff’s Police also arrested 26-yr-old Andrew Robinson of Hoopeston.  He was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear on a DUI charge.

A Tennessee motorist was jailed in Watseka for a weapons violation.  State Police stopped Dennis Harrington of Memphis for a traffic violation on I-57.  He admitted having a firearm and a search recovered 100 grams of cocaine.

Fire damaged an un-occupied house in Kankakee Wednesday.  Fire Chief Ron Young reports arson investigators spent much of yesterday at the scene.  No injury was reported to the houe on Elm Street.  Damage estimates were at $45,000.

The Sidell business district was hit by a fire Tuesday.  Six departments battled the blaze which destroyed a beauty salon.  An appliance store and two vacant buldings were also damaged.

  • A father and son from Clifton were killed Tuesday in Iroquois County.  Emergency responders say it was an electrocution accident.  39-yr-old Donald Goodrich and 19-yr-old Phillip Goodrich suffered fatal burns when an aluminum ladder they were moving came in contact with a power line.  It happened at a farmsite at 3177-N and 1500-E.  The ladder was found, with burn marks, still up against the power line running to a grain bin.  A passerby saw the victims laying on the ground and called 9-1-1.
  • A Milford area farmer suffered injuries Sunday when he was thrown from the tractor he was operating in Prarie Green Township.  Alan Boyden is being treated for broken ribs.  His tractor hit a parked ammonia tank wagon, tipping the tractor and throwing him tothe ground.  The tractor ran across a field and into a hedge row.  Wellington and Milford emergency responders answered the call.
  • Two reports of Armed Robberies within minutes of each other in Kankakee this morning led to an arrest.  Roderick Coleman faces charges related to both incidents.  Police are looking for another suspect who fled on foot.  A woman said she was robbed at gunpoint on Armour Road at 1:15 am.  Then—another woman reported she was robbed at gunpoint at a home on South 7th Street.  Both women described the men in a maroon car.  Police stopped a car matching the description, leading to Coleman’s arrest after a short foot chase.  A search of the car turned up a sawed off shotgun, a handgun and items taken from the second robbery victim.
  • Watseka students scored above the State level for a 4th consectutive year  on Illinois’ Standards Achievement Test and the Prarie State Achievement Exam.  Students grade 3-11 are tested each year.  Unit 9 reports 81% of students met or exceeded the Illinois State Standards.
  • Manteno school leaders are looking ahead.  The district has purchased 182 acres west of I-57 for future use.  The potential building site could accomodate a cluster, including a high school and middle and elementary school.
  • School districts in Iroquois and Kankakee Counties are preparing for crisis management.  Emergency responders conducted School Hazard and Vulnerability Analysis reviews in both counties this week.  The effort is coordinated by the Regional Office of Education to help districts get ready for emergency response situations. 
  • In Sports—-The Bulls get a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series against Miami.  The Sox win and the Cubs lose, again.

  • WCHS girls jv & varsity softball against St. Joe Ogden has been canceled.  However, vasity will play a double header at St. Joe Ogden on 5/7/07 - JV will NOT make up this game.
  • The KCC softball game scheduled for today at Prairie State College at 3 p.m. has been canceled.
  • Iroquois West HS baseball & softball vs. St. Thomas More have been canceled.
