THE FLOOD WARNING FOR THE IROQUOIS RIVER AT IROQUOIS IS CANCELLED.  HIGH NEAR 65 TODAY WITH A 40% CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND T-STORMS.

  • The “No Smoking” signs could be going up across Illinois.  The State Senate has passed a plan to ban smoking in all bars, restaurants, private clubs and other “indoor workplaces.” The plan passed by just four votes.  The Illinois House could vote on its own statewide plan next month.
  • House members said NO to a plan that would have made it illegal to light up in a car with kids inside.  Representative Bill Black says he wishes no one smoked, but says it’s not the Legislature’s job to watch Illinois residents this closely. 
  • Kankakee County citizens can check out the County’s website and click on “Sheriff alert sign-up” to receive Text Messages about emergencies.  The technology is now available to anyone choosing to register their cell phone number.  Officials say it’s a big advantage to inform the public about weather and other emergency situations, including Amber Alerts.
  • An Indiana woman turned herself in yesterday at the Iroquois County Jail.  34-yr-old Jody Dalton was wanted on a local warrant for DUI.
  • 24-yr-old Brandon Sellek of Thawville faces a DUI charge.  He was stopped Thursday by Illinois State Police for not wearing a seat belt.  The smell of alcohol promoted test which Sellek failed.  He was also cited for Driving Without Insurance and Driving While Revoked.

ILLIANA NEWS STORIES ON WGFA FOR THURSDAY, MARCH 29TH  >  WATSEKA ALDERMANIC CANDIDATES MEET IN FORUM TONIGHT….. “Talkin’ Trash” TONIGHT AT KCC…. DRUG ARREST ON I-57……

*  Flood Warnings continue thru Friday morning for the Iroquois River at Iroquois and the Kankakee River at Shelby.

* 22-year-old Parris Darrington of Phoneix (IL) is jailed in Watseka today.  Illinois State Polcie stopped a vehicle on I-57 at Ashkum just before 12:30 am.  The driver had failed to stop for an emergency vehicle.  Amell of burnt cannabis prompted a vehicle search.  Cannabis was found in a gym bag in the car’s trunk. 

* 21-yr-old Christopher Prarie of Momence turned himself in at the Iroquois County jail Wednesday.  he was wanted on a local warrant for Theft and Burlgary.

*  Two Watseka residents—21-yr-old Thoams Gray and 20-yr-old Anna Galarza—were arrested by Iroquois County Sheriff’s police Wednesday.  They’re charged with Illegal Transportation of Alcohol.  Gray was also cited for Illegal Posession of Drug Paraphernalia.

*  Aldermanic candidates for the Consolidated Election in Watseka next month will appear at a Candidates Forum tonight.  The Watseka Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the event at 6:30 pm at the WCHS cafeteria.  The public is invited to hear the candidates views on issues.

*  A forum at KCC tonight will find the Illinois Recycling Association presenting an overview of the history of trash and landfills.  The 7 pm event is free and open to the public.

ILLIANA’s TOP NEWS STORIES FOR WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2007 >  FLOOD WATERS BACK OFF; FLOOD WARNINGS STILL IN PLACE FOR THE IROQUOIS and KANKAKEE RIVERS…. HEALTH DEPT SUGGESTS WELLS BE INSPECTED…..  TWO GILMAN MEN FACE BATTERY CHARGES…. STATE COULD BECOME A POWER SUPPLIER…..

  • The Ford-Iroquois Public health department is recommending private well owners have their wells inspected following heavy rains to make sure surface water hasn’t entered the well thru the well cap, vent or seal.  Environmental Health Coordinator Terry Eimen says if evidence indicates surface water has entered the well, the water supply should be disinfected. 
  • Flood warnings continue for the Iroquois River at Iroquois and the Kankakee River at Shelby.  Minor flooding is still occurring but the river levels have dropped and are expected to drop below flood levels by Friday afternoon.
  • Iroquois County Sheriff’s Polcie responded to a call in Gilman Tuesday afternoon where two local men were arrested.  18-yr-old Zachary Weakley and 26-yr-old Ryan Harrison, both of Gilman, are charged with Domestic Battery. 
  • If ComEd and Ameren won’t negotiate with the state, they may have to compete with Illinois.  House Speaker Mike Madigan has introduced a plan to create what he calls the Illinois Power Authority.  It could generate, buy and sell electricity.  Madigan says the Power Authority would give Ameren and ComEd some competition.
