TOP STORIES ON 94.1 FM, WGFA —- angry citizens, lawmakers confront Ameren officials on electric rates….. Primary races in K3 County find most incumbents winners…. CPCI bows in Sectional play; St. Anne and PBL play tonight.

Partly cloudy to close out the month.  Illiana weather calss for a high near 42.  30% chance of rain this afternoon.

All but one incumbent came out winners in Tuesday’s Primary election in Kankakee County.  In the city of Kankakee, Bubba Cox defeated his challenger Glenn Davidson in the 1st Ward.  John Trost was an easy winner of challenger Steven Spraker in Ward 3.  The Ward 7 race saw incumbent Carl brown defeat Frances Jackson. 

The Village of Bradley had three incumbetns seeking re-election.  Two were winners…Lori Gadbois and Dennis Coy.  Bob Redmond lost by one vote to former Mayor Garry Baltazor.

The Livingston Manor was fined by the Illinois Dept of Public Health for a violation dealing with patient care.  But the future of the Manor is an issue the County Board is still wrestling with.  Changes appear obvious, but what will happen is still a question.

Flooding roads in Benton County, IN has emergency officials advising the public to be aware of potential water problems on roadways.  Melting snow and ice from the weekend has the NWS issuing flood advisories.

In Sports—-CPCI ends its season with a Sectional Loss last night in Class A basketball.  The T’wolves dropped a 54-45 OT game to Tolono Unity at the Tolono Sectional site.  St. Anne and PBL battle oppoents tonight; St. Anne and Beecher at the Herscher Sectional.  PBL meets St. Joe-Ogden at Tolono.

Voters in several Illinois communities go to the pols today.  It’s Primary Election Day leading to the April 17th Consolidated Election.  Kankakee has primary contests in aldermanic races in the 1st, 3rd and 7th Wards.  The Village of Bradley also offers a primary.

March 20th is the last day to register to vote for the April 17th election.  Voters needing to change an address should visit their respective election offices.

The Ryan Wolfe Family was named the “Farm Family of the Year” by the Iroquois County Soil & Water Conservation District last night.  The Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet was held at Woodworth.  The Conservation Award went to  the Ray Hollihan Family. John Wilken and Larry McTaggart were elected to the Board of Directors.

The latest round of winter weather still has some people in western Illinois in the dark.  Ameren says it’s trying to get the lights back on for thousands who lost power over the weekend, but a spokesman says it may be Wednesday before everyone is back online.

The Illinois House is geared up to hear a flood of complaints today about skyrocketing electric bills.  There’s some hope in the Senate.  Senate President Emil Jones says he’s hearing all the horros tories about 900-dollar bills from Ameren and something has to be done.

Class A Boys Sectional play gets started tonight.  CPCI, St. Anne, Herscher and PBL are among area teams still alive in the post-season.  CPCI meets Tolono Unity tonight at Tolono. At. Herscher, the host Tigers meet Chicago Dyett.  WGFA will be on hand at Tolono for the CPCI game.  Wednesday, St. Anne meets Beecher at the Herscher Sectional while PBL battles St. Joe-Ogden.

I-57 accident kills California woman; icy roads Saturday leads to several mishaps….. sleet triggers area power outages….. electric rate hikes spur legislature to consider rate rollback….. Ag Dept investigates animal welfare cases — News stories on 94.1 FM, WGFA this Monday……

After a weekend mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow, the Monday forcast calls for snow flurries and a high in the upper 30’s.  Details at WGFARADIO.COM

  • A 49-year-old San Jose, California woman died in a single-vehicle accident in Iroquois County.  Shu Mei Hsu was a passenger in a van northbound on I-57 near Clifton Saturday night.  Illinois State Polcie report 36-year-old Chao Fang of Noblesville, IN lost control and hit a guardrail.  The victim, a backseat passenger, was ejected.  She was transported by ambulance to Riverside Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  The driver and another passenger were not injured. Chebanse Township Fire also responded at 9:15 pm.
  • A handful of area communities were without power Saturday night.  The freezing rain and sleet took down utility lines and even snapped some poles.  Beaverville, Papineau, Pittwood, Donovan and the Clifton-Chebanse areas reported power outages.  Some community events, including church services were cancelled.
  •  Fire destroyed a two-story farmhouse just north of Watseka Sunday morning.  Watseka and Martinton fire department personnel answered the call around 5:30 am in Middleport Township.  Donny Norder managed to escape the burning structure and call for help from a neighbors house, after his attempts to snuff the fire failed.  Firefighters said Norder was overcome by the thick smoke and was forced to flee.  Firemen were at the scene on County Road 1950-N for some four hours.  The cause is under investigation, according to Lt. Larry Schroeder.
  • The last week was a busy one for the Illinois Department of Agriculture.  Officials investigated animal neglect cases in at least four counties, including Iroquois and Douglas.  Investigators from the Humane Society initiated action against the Sunset Hills Bunny Farm near Iroquois.  More than 200 rabbits were impounded, allegedly due to lack of care.  The State Ag Department issued a rescue order through local court action. 
  • A special meeting of the Illinois House (Tuesday) will address skyrocketing electric bills consumers are dealing with across Illinois.  The House will conduct a rare Committee of the Whole to consider HB 1750.  The bill extends the life of the electric rate freeze that expired last month by rolling prices back to their previous levels and requiring utility companies to refund with interest the difference between the old and new rates that collect from consumers during the period the higher rates are in effect.
  • Sectional Basketball pairings this week finds CPCI, ST. ANNE and HERSCHER continuing post-season play.  WGFA radio will carry action from the Herscher Sectional and the Tolono Sectional on 94.1 FM.

  • Illinois Congressman Tim Johnson admits he’s gotten an earful over his vote last Friday  not to support President Bush’s call for increased troops for the war in Iraq.  But Johnson, who was one of 17 GOP House members not voting to back the President, says he’s representing the voters of the 15th District and he’s received calls 20 and even 30-1 from people against an influx of troops.  Republican leaders have criticized Johnson for his vote; questioning his loyalty to the party.
  • State Representative Bill Black is among the Republican lawmakers pointing a finger at the governor’s office for lack of leadership in dealing with the electric rate hike issue.  The Danville lawmaker says Governbor Rod Blagojevich can’t be found.  Yet, the Governor said in his re-election bid the rate hike issue is of top importance.
  • The Ford-Iroquois Extension Office is directing today’s annual Ag Day in Buckley.  Former Illinois Farm Bureau President Ron Warfield is among the featured speakers for several presentations offered from 8:30 am ’til 3 pm at Christ Lutheran High School.  WGFA Radio joins the corporate sponsor list for the annual Ag event.
  • Kankakee Community College sponsors its annual College Fair Tuesday, March 6th at the college.  Up to 30 public and private colleges and universities will be represented.
  • Model train enthusiast Lenard Compton of Hoopeston is among those organizing this weekend’s Hoopeston Model Train Show.  The event is Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Center in McFerren Park.  The event offers hobbyists a chance to buy, sell and trade model train items.  The show begins at 10 am each day.
  • Several area women had an opportunity Thursday to learn about ways to maintain a health heart.  Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka sponsored the “Go Red for Women Heart Luncheon.”
  • Boys Basketball Regional Championships are tonight.  Title games on 94.1 FM include the CPCI vs Donovan matchup at Hoopeston and the St. Anne vs Coal City game at Momence. Other championships are at Braidwood where Herscher meets Dwight, Beecher and Peotone meet in the Peotone championship.

  • Seven Prarie Central High School students have been banned from extracurricular activities because of their roles in an underage drinking party that one student dead.  16-yr-old Travis Steidinger of Fairbury was found in a field Sunday.  he had attended a party Saturday night in nearby Forrest.  The death investigation continues. 
  • Illinois basketball player Jamar Smith–charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury–plans to plead not guilty to the charges.  He surrendered to authorities on a warrant.  His lawyer says Smith will request a jury trial.
  • Watseka Police arrested 22-yr-old Ronnie Turner of Watseka on charges of Burglary and Theft.
  • Firefighters in Indiana Wednesday rescued a baby from a wrecked car.  The 5-month-old was blue from suffocating when two firemen approached a car wrapped around a utility pole in Union Township between Hobart and Valparaiso.  The infant was crushed between the door and dash and its mouth was blocked by a piece of the car’s interior.  A fire department spokesman said proper training by the firemen saved the baby.
  • Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka today is hosting a healthy heart program for women.  The ‘Go Red for Women’ program is at Celebrations in Watseka.  Dr. William McCarthy is the featured speaker.
  • The Chief is now retired.  Chief Illiniwek danced his last dance at the University of Illinois last night.  The mascot’s reign ended an 81-year university tradition.  The U of I officials made the decision to retire the Chief after the NCAA classified the Chief an offensive use of American-Indian imagery.
  • Boys High School Basketball Regional play continued Wednesday night.  CPCI survived a scare from Hoopeston Area 40-37 while Donovan defeated Milford 70-60 in the Hoopeston Regional.  At Momence, St. Anne was a winner over Central and Coal City defeated Grant Park.  At Reed Custer, Herscher defeated Tri Point and Dwight was winner over Wilmington.
